We have talked in the past about the problem with glass in the recycling stream. The problem is no one wants it. It is a commodity with a zero–or even negative–value. The writing is on the wall–recycling companies will likely stop taking glass in the near future (or charging us for it). The answer for us is going to be separating and crushing glass, here on island, to create a useful landscaping material. Even if we gave the crushed glass away for free, it will still save our community a great deal of money per ton, because we won’t be shipping it off island.
