Just $25k Needed to Fully Fund the New Exchange

On behalf of the ORS board, its volunteers, and all supporters, we’d like to offer a sincere thanks to everyone who has given a donation. $25,000 is still needed to complete the project though. No donation amount is too small! Please give generously today, if you are able. Donate now!

Dear Orcas Islanders,

Over the years The Exchange has diverted thousands upon thousands of useful items away from the landfill and back into our community. The Exchange provides school clothes for needy families, home furnishings for the displaced, materials for artists, the odd part to fix up a broken bicycle, and so much more

The Exchange brings huge social and economic value to our island while at the same time doing right by the environment. In any given year this beloved community institution can divert more than 500 tons of the island’s waste stream into re-use, and away from the landfill.

One year ago, Orcas Recycling Services (ORS) reached out, in a letter much like this one, asking you to help us rebuild The Exchange—and boy did you answer the call!

Another exciting development, in the form of a new relationship with San Juan County, has also helped us move up the time line to rebuild The Exchange.

The County has agreed to build the “shell” of the new Exchange building—a pole-frame metal clad structure—while leaving responsibility for all the interior build-out, including utilities, to ORS. We will then rent the building from the County under long-term provisions in our contract.
screen-shot-2016-12-12-at-8-42-09-amThis is really exciting news. It gets the project off the drafting board and into reality. But it means we need $245,000 to complete the interior construction, including utilities, fixtures, and equipment and ensure we have sufficient funds for contingencies, start-up costs, and operational readiness.

Thanks to your support, we already have over $200,000 worth of donations in the bank.

We need your help again this year to reach our goal of raising the remaining $25,000.
Together we WILL get this job done!

screen-shot-2016-12-12-at-8-45-06-amOrcas Recycling Services/The Exchange intends to build one of the most forward-thinking, comprehensive waste management facilities anywhere in the Country. We will focus on improvements that will help us contain costs and reduce waste. A new Exchange reuse facility is the essential first step.

February 2017 marked the fourth anniversary of the fire that consumed the old Exchange. Your generous contribution today will make 2017 the year The New Exchange rises from the ashes!

Thank you very much for your involvement and generous support!

Best Regards,
